Luckily for us, Micah Rowland has spent a while reverse engineering this key, and produced a very handy script that easily allows us to force icons to be visible. Windows will by default hide this from your users, and doesn’t provide an easy way to automate or script the visibility of these icons for system administrators, as the registry key that stores this information is a long binary key. For example, you might roll out an instant messaging or business application that you would like to always be visible via the notification area. I hope to see an update to the OS to add that functionality, but it is now one at a time. Instead, you have to do them individually. One annoyance about this is you can’t select multiple icons at once and pin them. The Taskbar works the same as it did in Windows 7, so you can move the icons around how you like. You’ll see the program you just selected pinned on the Taskbar.

With the general availability of Windows 8.1, customers on Windows 8 had until January 12, 2016, to move to Windows 8.1 to remain supported. Windows 8.1 reached the end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2018, and will reach end of Extended Support on January 10, 2023.
