How much tribute do they give to sithis and the night mother when they're not out killin people or helping them fake their deaths (only oblivion DB quest I know aside from that rufio guy)? They're pretty damn important to them, but I never saw a lot of it. I never played their quests in Oblivion as I never got very far in that game (I got kind of bored of it) so I can't really say they're no good there either, it's just the idea of it. The dark brotherhood's existence seems paradoxical to me. These murders are supposed to have a big impact on the war threatening Skyrim, and you don't get captured and tortured? Then there's the fact that if you get caught killing important targets like Vitoria and Maro's son, you can get off with a slap on the wrist or flashing your thane's badge and carry on with your business, as if you had just killed a common farmer or beggar. And unlike the Mage's college, the quests you receive actually require some skill in stealth (you can become arch mage with very little magic experience) However, your options upon meeting Astrid for the first time are either kill the Dark brotherhood, or join them and get to know them all and become part of their family, then watch them all get wiped out any way, including the cute pet spider.

Unlike the Companions, the members are likeable and affectionate towards each other and I ended up caring about them instead of tolerating their arrogant attitudes. Personally I have a love/hate relationship with the whole Dark Brotherhood story line. She doesn't even like it when Cicero shows up with his whispering corpse that you're all supposed to worship like a goddess. Yeah, Astrid runs it more like a family business than a religious cult. Also, forcing your religion down their throats isn't really professional. It's only natural to ask for a money from your client. Who risks their life to take another, for free? Money is indeed, a means to an end, but if they were going around Tamriel, talking about Sithis, Void, Dread Father and god-knows-what, then they wouldn't be what even Astrid's group is. We are talking about real Dark Brotherhood, right? Not that half-assed excuse for assassins that Astrid was leading.

The Red Mantis in Pathfinder are another. Not just the dark brotherhood either, but cults of assassins in general really. If I wanted someone dead, I wouldn't hire the loony going on about Sithis. Logically, that should make them even more difficult to approach.

They don't do that and instead just ask who they're out to kill and go do the job. It seems to make sense at first but it really seems like they should make it more clear to the client that the money isn't what's important, it's killing in Sithis' name. My issue is with death cults of assassins.
